Takeaways from the ITS Ertico European Transport Conference.
Like most things this year, the ITS Ertico Conference happened online due to coronavirus. That did not stop, however, the incredible industry insights that were given, showing the joint effort being taken by governments and private companies, to ensure that public transport becomes more relevant to the people that it serves across Europe.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the conference.
Technology is at the heart of change
With ever-increasing problems like climate change and congestion control, both national and international governments are looking for solutions to improve public transport. New emerging technologies are playing their part in shaping the cities of tomorrow, through data analytics and digital twinning (creating a virtual version of a city and using that to test new transport and logistical solutions).

Data needs to be universally available
Often private transport companies are reluctant to share their data with other companies in the space because they are worried, they will lose competitive advantage and passengers. This reluctance, however, is causing the bigger issue of stunting the growth of the public transport industry in general, by not allowing data to be universally available so that it can be used to improve the overall transport infrastructure. More data means more efficiency, which makes public transport more appealing to passengers, than their personal vehicles.
Multiservice travel needs to be less confusing
Mobility of the future must be diverse, as most destinations cannot be traveled to on public transport via a single transport source, however, using multimodal services are often slow, unreliable, and confusing. This is why most people choose to use personal vehicles because it is often not clear what the fastest or easiest way to travel is on other forms of transport. This can be solved by offering solutions that calculate the passengers’ route and transport modes for them, so all they have to do is enter a starting location and a destination.
