Who we are

We’re an eclectic group of people at uTrack but on a clear mission to make public transport amazing. Our solutions have a meaningful impact to our clients, who transport over 2 billion people a year on their Buses, Coaches & Trains.

We’re looking for someone with a passion for transport/technology so personal projects or work in the past that demonstrates these traits would be ideal. Sharing some of the technical challenges you’ve overcome dealing with large volumes of data or real-time systems or optimisation of resources would be also welcome.

Fun stories or interesting facts about public transport are always welcome.

The role

This role is responsible for managing back-end services and the interchange of data between the server and the users.  Your primary focus will be the development of all server-side logic, definition and maintenance of the central database, and ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front end.  You will also be responsible for integrating the front-end elements built by your co-workers into the application.  Therefore, a basic understanding of front-end technologies is necessary as well.

What you will be doing

  • Integration of user-facing elements developed by front-end developers
  • Build efficient, testable and reusable PHP modules
  • Integration of data storage solutions (may include databases, key-value stores, blob stores etc)
  • Solve complex performance problems and architectural challenges

If we think you’re a potential fit, we will arrange an HR telephone interview, if all goes well, you’ll be further tested on your technical abilities through a technical test.

Skils and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of PHP
  • Understanding the fully synchronous behaviour of PHP
  • Understanding of MVC design patterns
  • Basic understanding of front-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3
  • Knowledge of object-oriented PHP programming
  • Understanding accessibility and security compliance
  • Strong knowledge of the common PHP or web server exploits and their solutions
  • Understanding fundamental design principles behind a scalable application
  • Familiarity with limitations of PHP as a platform and its workarounds
  • Creating database schemas that represent and support business processes
  • Familiarity with SQL/NoSQL databases and their declarative query languages
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git
  • User authentication and authorisation between multiple systems, servers and environments
